Online casino sites tend to fall into two (granted, fairly wide tanging) categories, there are those who take themselves very seriously, these sites are normally aimed more at the high rollers and professional online casino players. The mascot of the site, who is called Hugo (obviously) really is incredibly happy, and since the site’s launch in mid-2016, the intention has always been to make players equally happy.

So, what does Happy Hugo have in way of content to ensure that the site is noticed in the crowd?

Design and theme

When you visit Happy Hugo, you are greeted by a sparse homepage in terms of content, but a busy one in terms of design. You immediately land in outer space, with Happy Hugo himself smiling at you from inside a rocket (full disclosure, it took me longer than it should’ve to realise this wasn’t an old man with a beard) with colourful planets in the background.

You may initially think that Happy Hugo has opted to not put any content on the homepage, which is rare for a new site, but this is not the case.

There is a toolbar at the bottom of the page which allows you to scan through popular games, recently played games, and favourites, and access them with one click, having them tucked away at the bottom simply allows more room for design.

Navigation at Happy Hugo is all pretty simple, all information, games, promotions, and anything else you may want is easy to find, and the habit of using pop up toolbars means that the site never seems too overwhelming, which is necessary when colours are so bold and bright.

All in all, this is an excellent execution of a design theme, it may take a little getting used to, but once you do, you may never want to go back to conventionally designed casino sites.

Games

Looking great is all well and good, but it takes more than that to break into the online casino market, the most important thing is to have excellent gaming options, and it is here that Happy Hugo stumbles a little.

It isn’t that there aren’t great games here, because there are, but as titles are provided by a limited collection of software developers (BetSoft, GameART, iSoftBet, and NetEnt) it never seems like quite enough.

There are strong games here, due to the quality of the developers used, but with many other sites offering games from these four providers and an additional 20 plus as well, this simply does not feel like enough.

If you are a new player to the scene, then Happy Hugo is a great place to play, but for the seasoned veteran, there’s going to be a lot more offered in terms of gaming options in order for Happy Hugo to become a place that you will want to play, which is a shame, because it’s a totally charming site.
